Sustainable Water Management in Africa

Individual farm water plans are necessary but not sufficient. Where multiple abstractors share an aquifer or a river reach, the cumulative effect determines whether any of them has long-term security.

Catchment-scale assessment — mapping abstractors, estimating recharge and modelling cumulative drawdown — allows realistic allocation and identifies where storage or managed recharge would benefit all users.

This is also where government, NGO and commercial interests align most naturally, and where well-structured public-private engineering programmes deliver the greatest return.

Sustainability here is not an environmental add-on; it is the condition under which the commercial asset keeps working.
