Solar Irrigation in Southern Africa

Falling module prices and unreliable grid supply have made solar pumping the lowest whole-life cost option for a growing share of Zimbabwean schemes. The engineering, however, is different from grid or diesel design.
Solar output follows an irradiance curve, so the system must either store water or store energy. In most agricultural cases water storage is cheaper and simpler than batteries, which makes reservoir and tank sizing part of the pump design rather than a separate exercise.
Hydraulic efficiency matters more than in grid systems: every metre of avoidable friction head translates directly into additional array capacity. Careful pipe sizing typically pays for itself several times over in panel cost.
Well-designed solar schemes remove fuel logistics and tariff exposure entirely — the strongest resilience argument available to most farms today.
